Gear advice you can actually trust
AWD Camper is an independent publication about car camping, vehicle-based travel and the move toward electric, all-wheel-drive adventure rigs.
We started AWD Camper because shopping for car camping gear is a mess of sponsored lists and copy-pasted spec sheets. We wanted one place that tells you, plainly, what's worth your money and what to skip — whether you're sleeping in a hatchback for a weekend or building out a full overlanding rig.
How we test
Every recommendation starts with real use. We sleep on the mattresses, run the fridges for days off a single battery, and live with the gear on actual trips before we rank it. Where we can't test everything ourselves, we're upfront about it and lean on measured specs, owner feedback and long-term reliability data.
- We buy or borrow most gear ourselves — brands don't get to approve reviews.
- Ratings weigh comfort, durability, value and how well something fits real vehicles.
- We update guides as products change, get discontinued, or get beaten by something better.
How we stay independent
AWD Camper is reader-supported. Some links are affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission if you buy through them — at no extra cost to you. That income keeps the lights on, but it never decides our picks. If the cheapest option is the best option, that's what we'll tell you.
